art

ok so we're back at it! heading somewhere! i switched off anti-aliasing for my main brush and i think it's been giving pretty fun results. nice to switch things up once in a while :)

i never have much to say about artbreeder paintovers (and synthetic paintovers in general). idk, i just needed to decompress real quick. first one took me about 30 minutes (kero kero bonito - civilisation) and the second an hour (green day - american idiot).

these two were warmups rather than finished pieces, but i've plans of putting a little more time on a similar piece as we speak. featuring fucked up post apocalyptic megastructures mayhaps ^_^

i also made them a page here on the site. it's a wip and i'll take it slow, mostly just collecting things in one place. i wanna make a more fun and intricate layout when i can. there's a specific piece i'd like to work on for the background / frame but i've been kinda procrastinating it because i don't think i can quite do it justice yet.

regular home renovation simulator (2022): short and sweet lil horror game, i love how the house shifts. it's neat!
observation (2020): ugh i really wanted to play this game but the mouse is so fucking bad, and there doesn't seem to be any way to get the regular system mouse. i need to try a controller but i was really just expecting it to work yknow. a played a little bit and am sure i'd probably enjoy it well enough if the most basic control of all didn't suck entirely. boggles the mind, because stories untold plays perfectly well
heaven will be mine (2018): it's nice. haven't finished yet though

movies and series

land of the lustrous (2017): oh man wish i didn't find the lustrous' designs so off-putting. the 3d can also be hit or miss, i love medium contrasts and sometimes it fucks but sometimes it flops. regardless, i liked the anime, and the manga has a nice art style so i'll take a look at it eventually. when i'm ready for a 100+ chapter romp
succession (2018-2023): yeah managed to catch up more or less in time for season 4 and now watching weekly. full update when it's all over but i love this series :)
little shop of horrors (1986): love me a fun campy musical :)
gone girl (2014): i mean what is there to say, this movie fucks. wish the score was a little more though, i love trent reznor and there's some great moments but it feels a little too understated imo
twin peaks: the return (2017): finally got around to finishing s3 and. i'm not too sure what i feel about it. it was a very segmented watch and it has such a distinct mouthfeel to the 90s seasons. the visual effects are all killer here, it's really strong visually, but the slow pace kinda lost me — 18 episodes, an hour long each, is a lot for me. maggie mae fish's video is quite interesting though.
yellowjackets (2021-): and since i'm on top of all my hour-long series now, figured i'd finally start this one! yeah man put those girls in a situation. it's pretty fun, has moments of solid horror too. i've some qualms here and there (shauna's daughter is so fucking annoying why are the 90's teenagers well written and she's like... that? also normal stuff like a dead bear being treated as horror?), and it's a slow ass burn, but it's pretty good, i think it'll turn out to be quite good after the whole thing is finished, because the story is compelling. the pilot in particular is extremely good, i wish they kept up that energy throughout the first season. idk i can't help comparing it to the terror, which has a faster pace that i prefer. haven't watched much of season 2 yet so no thoughts on that for now. glad she ate that ear though. good for her
the hotel (2018-): ok dunno where to put podcasts but here seems appropriate? yeah i spedrun it a bit according to this post. it's plenty of fun, and i love the shorter episode length of the earlier seasons.
magia record: puella magi madoka magica side story (2020): pmmm is one of those works that aesthetically rewired my brain, but i'd never got around to watching magia record before. i really love the classic rpg inspired designs, they're super cool. the witches are rather toned down for my tastes, but the story and all the magical girls are great. love it when 13 year old girls suffer more than jesus. if you have never been one, that's literally what it's like
adolescence of utena (1999): wish i hadn't watched it as the crunchiest video known to man because utena is all about gorgeous artwork, but we gotta do what we gotta do and i've been meaning to watch this forever. it's great!
thoroughbreds (2017): it's a fun chill movie! i quite liked it, they could have been more toxic with one another though
nosferatu (1922): we went to a screening with a live radiohead cover band and it was super cool! better than the sum of its parts! the movie also does some really nice tricks with its effects and stuff, it's neat :)

books and manga

dracula (bram stoker): could not pinpoint why, but i think with my vampiric deep dive these past months, the book feels less like they're not aware they're in dracula, and it's just a nice novel.
blame! (tsutomu nihei): who up eroticizing megastructures? i saved so many pages of this bad boy holy shit. took me a while to warm up to it since there wasn't much to grasp to in the beginning, but it's real nice. i haven't quite finished yet but i'm on the last stretch ^_^
neuromancer (william gibson): um it's so. white guy writing scifi. i mean sure, it's a pretty influential text in the genre or whatever, but i do think it's also completely mediocre. it feels altogether themeless, cobbled together from vaguely "cool" textures and little thought as to why those things are there. also rather racist.
flatland (edwin a. abbott): something nice and fast, it's cool
kalpa imperial (angélica gorodischer): driving me a little crazy that i can't reverse engineer (as it were) the way i found this book, and i'm sure it was when looking for more house of leaves, which was also how i found the dictionary of the khazars. i say this because i has nothing to do with those two books. but whatever, i really liked it

i'm also reading last things: death and the apocalypse in the middle ages but they're pretty dense essays (as someone with no academic background on the subject whatsoever) so it's slow going and i shouldn't be dual wielding. but that's neither here nor there. also started dungeon meshi, which i should have done sooner because it's really fun and there's a lot of "he just like me fr" moments with laios ^_^
